The northern plains of Mars include some of the flattest real estate in the solar system. These plains also have a lot of water locked up in the form of ice at shallow depths in the ground.

Pioneer City has been positioned to take maximum advantage of these essential geographical features.

The city quarter is sheltered inside a scenic 4km-wide pedestal crater on the Utopia Plains, set apart by a raised platform, or pedestal, surrounding the rim crest. It stands 60 to 70 meters above the surrounding plains, providing the city with spectacular 360 degree views of the wide, gently rolling landscape under an enormous sky.
